CHAPTER 8

DAMON

I paced my study, fury still simmering in my veins at the memory of Stephen invading my home and terrorizing Carlos. The bastard had gone too far this time. I would not stop until I brought his entire operation crashing down around him and saw him locked up for good.

Picking up my phone, I made several terse calls to my security team and investigators, instructing them to ramp up surveillance on Stephen and his associates and accelerate the evidence gathering. I wanted his misdeeds exposed to the light, leaving him with nowhere left to hide. By the time I was done, my associates knew better than to question the steel edge in my voice. The hunt was on.

With those wheels set in motion, I forced myself to take a deep breath and soften my demeanor before going down the hall to check on Carlos. He’d been quiet since we returned from the police station, no doubt still processing the traumatic events of the day. I needed to provide him with care and comfort now.

I found him curled on the window seat in the reading nook, staring blankly at the rain pattering against the glass pane. Wordlessly I sat and gathered him close, cradling him against my chest and pressing a kiss to his tousled curls.

“Talk to me, love,” I implored gently when he remained silent in my arms. “Let me carry some of this burden with you.”

Carlos let out a shuddering breath, fingers knotting in my shirt like I was his lifeline. “I just keep thinking...what if I have to leave you? I can’t—” His voice broke and he buried his face against my shoulder.

My heart constricted, a spike of anger jabbing through me at the power Stephen still held to hurt him so deeply, even from afar. I cupped Carlos’s face between my palms, gently tipping his head up so our eyes met, willing him to feel my conviction.

“I will not allow that to happen,” I stated firmly. “Whatever it takes, I will fix this. You belong here with me, and I will fight for that future together. Do you believe me?”

Carlos searched my gaze for a long moment before giving a small nod, eyes welling with emotion. “Yes, I believe you,” he whispered. “I’m sorry, I shouldn’t doubt this. Not after everything.”

I brushed a stray tear from his cheek with my thumb. “You have nothing to apologize for. But trust this—we are in control now. Stephen loses more power over you each day. Stay focused on that light ahead.”

Over the next week I did everything in my power to keep Carlos’s spirits up as the day of his immigration hearing approached. My team worked tirelessly gathering evidence, while I showered Carlos with small thoughtful surprises—home-cooked meals, exploring new parts of the city together, quiet evenings reading or watching movies curled up together. We moved from the house to the high-rise, using different cars and routes, making sure that no one could follow us no matter what.

The morning of the restraining order hearing dawned crisp and clear, at odds with the nerves churning in my gut.
